HISTORICAL BACKGOUND 

Ipokia Local Government came into being alongside other 182 Local Governments created on December 13,1996. Carved out of the old Egbado South Local Government, Ipokia Local Government happens to be one of the five Local Governments created in Ogun State that year and has its Headquaters in Ipokia.

BOUNDARIES

The Local Government share boundaries with Yewa North Local Government in the north; Lagos State in the South, the Republic of Benin in the west and both Yewa South and Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government in the east, hence it is popularly referred to as the Main gate to the Gate- way State.

POPULATION/LANDMASS

Ipokia Local Government has a population of about 300,000 people (1991 Census Figures).It is rural in nature with few towns, but more than 300 villages and hamlets spreading over an area of approximately 180.535 sq.Kilometres.

The inhabitants are predominantly Anagos, Eyos and Eguns
 
INFRASTRUCTURE/SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
 
Education:The Local Government has about 72 public primary school and 10 public secondary schools scattered across the Local Government Area. It can also boast of about 27 private nursery and primary schools and two private secondary schools.
 
Medical And Health Institutions: There are many health institution owned by both the government and private individuals in the Local Government Area. There are two General  Hospitals located at Idiroko and Ipokia, while Health Clinics are scattred all around the Local Government area.\
 
ECONOMIC/INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES
 
The vegetation of the area is more of the Savannah type as the area cannot boast of any thick forest though the land along the lagoon and riverside is swampy and mashy and is often flooded during the raining season. This type of vegetation and climatic condition found here have supported the planting of palm trees on a large scale and this explain why the local Government has palm oil and Kernel in large quantities.

The people in the Local Government area also produce mats and foodstuffs such as Lagba, Fufu, Koko e.t.c. with a pre-occupation, which is mainly farming. The main agricultural products found in the area are Cassava, Melon, Maize and Yam, while oil palm produce forms the major cash crop

TOURISM

It is very important to mention that Ipokia Local Government is blessed with an important and very tich island known as TONGEJI ISLAND. The island stretches to the Repulic of Benin and it is of singnficant importance to Ogun State in particular and Federal Rebulic of Nigeria as a whole.

The other tourist centre is the Nigeria/ Republic of Benin Frontier at Idiroko, which is the main gate to the Gateway State, OGUN.
